ViaVoice has some benefits over Dragon NaturallySpeaking in certain application environments. However, in general, users are advised to look first at the power of Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

This product is being used by thousands of people in the UK and the US. It has been developed continuously over 14 years as a result of responses to user feedback and recommendations from trainers. I have trained many hundreds of people to use this extraordinarily effective suite of programs. These users have come mainly from the visually handicapped and dyslexic communities. The chief benefit of this software over its competitors is that it is specifically designed to link voice recognition and TTS software, along with popular word processing software. Put in layman's terms, this allows the user to dictate what they want to write and to hear what has been created automatically. SpeechMaster is ready to use from the outset. There is no frustrating set-up phase. The well-established software has to be seen (and heard!!) to be believed.

This Review was carried out by EVALUATE - The Digitial Evaluation Service, 2004. Introduction: This software is appropriate to use with all age ranges.
I have already started using it with individual pupils, working within small groups, on a laptop with a headset as recommended.
Curriculum coverage: This product can support all curriculum areas where accurate writing is necessary. It develops and consolidates pupils’ knowledge about language such as homophones, plurals and usage. The echo feature can be set to read back over individual words or sentences. This can be successfully used to introduce the idea of sentences and develop a pupil’s knowledge of punctuation.
Learning outcomes: This generic resource can be used to enable pupils to create text independently. Pupils develop their vocabulary and can look at word usage. Speech Master helps pupils to proof-read their work by identifying spelling mistakes and giving them different correct options to choose from.
Summary: A generic tool that turns text into speech and speech into text, Speech Master enables all pupils to create or read documents independently using Word. As soon as pupils know how it works and the program recognises their voice patterns, they can create accurate documents, proof-read the text and check spellings. Once teachers are familiar with the options, they can preset navigation within the system before pupils use it, and set the comprehensive programme to different levels, enabling pupils to check their own spelling, word usage and build their vocabulary. This program enables students to overcome the barrier of writing and concentrate on content rather than the mechanics of writing. Pupils with visual impairments and dyslexia will benefit, as will weak writers. Initial work with my pupils indicates they are thrilled to be able to turn words into speech. Clearly Speech Master will also be useful as a reward mechanism!
